Growing video advertising budgets create an opportunity for entertainment businesses, but the relevant opportunity depends on which inventory a publisher can actually sell. A broad digital-video forecast should not become an unsupported revenue assumption for an individual streaming service.
In its May 2026 digital-video report announcement, IAB projected that US digital-video advertising spending would exceed US$80 billion in 2026, up 11% year on year. Its category combines connected TV, online video and social video, including YouTube. This is a US forecast, not a completed global revenue result.
Identify the inventory inside the forecast
A creator studio distributing through a social platform, a broadcaster selling connected-TV impressions and a specialist publisher running its own player have different routes to revenue. They can all participate in digital video while controlling different parts of the transaction.
A sales plan should specify the viewing environment, the advertiser’s purchase route and the party responsible for reporting delivery. That gives the team a defined proposition to test with buyers rather than a generic claim that video is growing.
Build a bridge from audience to sellable supply
Viewing activity alone does not describe the amount of advertising the business can sell. The model also needs to consider the advertising experience it intends to offer, the inventory available through its agreements and the demand that can reach that inventory.
Each assumption should have an owner and a source. Where the business has no operating history, label the assumption as a scenario and define how a pilot will test it. A forecast becomes more useful when a team can identify which input would change the decision.
Prepare a buyer-facing evidence pack
A practical evidence pack can explain the content proposition, audience definition, available formats, measurement approach and reporting cadence. It should also make clear which results the publisher can directly observe and which depend on information supplied by another party.
Campaign evaluation needs the same precision. A delivery metric can establish that agreed inventory ran, while a business-outcome study asks a different question. Combining them under a broad “performance” label can make the proposition harder for a buyer to assess.
IAB’s forecast is a useful signal about the scale and direction of one national market. For a global entertainment company, the next task is to construct comparable evidence for the territories and distribution routes it actually serves. That narrower view is what can turn market interest into a credible commercial offer.
