Film distribution in Brazil: a larger cinema estate still needs a local release plan

WTDaBuzz market analysis · Brazil · 17 October 2026

Brazil ended 2025 with more cinema screens, but a distributor still needs a title-level explanation of how that footprint becomes an audience. The latest annual statistical publication from ANCINE supplies a market baseline without supplying a release plan.

According to the agency’s 2025 audiovisual yearbook announcement, published on 31 August 2026, the country finished the year with 3,544 operating screens, compared with 3,510 in 2024. Exhibition complexes increased from 866 to 886. The annual cinema audience was 112.8 million; Brazilian films accounted for 11.1 million admissions and a 9.9% share.

A larger estate is a starting condition

A national screen count describes capacity, not the booking available to a new film. The commercial questions sit closer to the release: which cities matter to the intended audience, which venues can programme the title, what dates are achievable and what campaign support those dates require.

International sellers should ask a potential local partner to explain the route from an audience hypothesis to an exhibition proposal. A total national footprint is useful context, but a credible plan names priorities and the evidence behind them.

Keep domestic share in context

The Brazilian-film share is an aggregate outcome across the year’s releases. It is neither a ceiling for a particular local film nor a forecast for an imported one. Genre, timing, awareness and the release itself still need to be investigated for the project in question.

A seller can make the discussion more concrete by supplying comparable titles with clear periods and territories. Comparisons should explain the relevant similarity rather than simply select a successful film. A festival response, a social audience and a theatrical transaction are different signals.

Connect localization to the booking plan

Before materials are commissioned, the parties can map which versions the planned release needs, who supplies and approves them, and when they must reach the local team. Trailer assets, stills, synopsis and language versions should be connected to the intended outlets and campaign.

The commercial budget should then separate the cost of preparing the title for market from the spend intended to reach audiences. That makes it easier to see whether a proposed release can be supported, and which assumptions remain untested.

ANCINE’s figures establish that Brazil’s exhibition estate expanded in 2025. Turning that fact into a distribution decision requires local audience evidence, an achievable booking strategy and a deliverable campaign. Those are the questions a serious rights conversation should resolve next.
