A stable market share can coexist with sharply concentrated results. For distributors evaluating UK independent films, that distinction matters more than a single percentage describing the category.
The BFI’s February 2026 statistical release put UK independent films’ 2025 box-office share at 6.8%, compared with 6.9% in 2024. It also reported that the top 20 UK independent films generated £61.9 million, representing 90% of the year’s box office for all UK independent Comscore-reported releases. The share and the concentration measure answer different questions.
Choose comparables deliberately
A distributor estimating a release should explain why the selected comparable films belong in the analysis. A shared national classification alone does not establish a shared audience, campaign scale or release pattern.
A hypothetical acquisition team might begin with several films that reached a similar audience, then document the differences that could affect the comparison. The exercise is more useful when weaker results remain visible alongside the successes.
Do not turn a category total into a typical outcome
The aggregate measures do not describe what a newly acquired title will earn. A market that contains a small group of strong performers can produce a misleading impression if only those films are used to justify the next purchase.
The commercial discussion should therefore include the range of possible outcomes and the assumptions behind the release plan. The team needs to understand how much spend is committed before it receives useful audience feedback and which later decisions remain adjustable.
Connect the evidence to the release strategy
A practical acquisition memo can pair its comparable-title analysis with a defined audience, an initial release approach and the evidence needed before expanding the campaign. That makes the market data part of a decision rather than decoration around a preferred outcome.
The BFI figures are a reminder to look inside a category. A national share helps describe the market; the distribution of results helps a distributor ask more realistic questions about its own exposure.
