Production capability and international distribution are connected, but one does not automatically produce the other. A new NFVF study makes the system that carries completed work into markets a distinct industry question.
The May 2026 comparative distribution report examines South Africa alongside international markets, including the United States, South Korea, Brazil and Nigeria. Its diagnosis emphasises the gap between production strength and sustained distribution performance. This is the study’s analysis, rather than a claim that every South African producer faces the same commercial situation.
Make the route to market explicit
A producer’s project plan should identify who is responsible for the next distribution conversation and what materials that person needs. A completed work can still require considerable commercial preparation before a buyer can assess it.
A hypothetical independent feature team can distinguish the creative delivery from the sales package, the current rights record and the audience proposition. Those elements should be connected without assuming that finishing the film completes the release plan.
Use international examples selectively
A benchmark market can provide a useful question, but its institutions and commercial structure may differ from the producer’s own environment. A company should identify which practice it is investigating and why it could be relevant.
The comparison should not become a claim that copying one visible feature of a larger market will reproduce its outcomes. The proposed operating change needs to be evaluated in the company’s actual circumstances.
Track commercial progress in stages
An enquiry, a buyer review and an executed agreement are different milestones. A practical distribution review should show which stage each opportunity has reached and what is required next.
The NFVF report is useful because it puts distribution capability beside production capability. For entertainment businesses seeking international reach, the immediate task is to make the route from completed work to a specific commercial decision clear enough to manage.
