A producer approaching film sales agents needs a conversation about representation, not simply a request to “find a distributor”. The useful preparation is a concise account of the project, its available rights and the commercial work the producer wants a partner to undertake.

WIPO’s film-industry overview connects rights documentation with financing and distribution. Its practical relevance to a first sales conversation is straightforward: a partner needs a dependable account of what the producer can offer.

Prepare a decision-ready package

A working package can include the film’s status, a synopsis, the creative team, a screener when appropriate and an availability summary. The producer should know which materials are approved to share and how access will be managed.

For a completed film, unresolved delivery work should be visible. For a project in development, separate confirmed elements from ambitions. A partner cannot meaningfully assess a proposition if a proposed attachment is presented as a completed commitment.

Ask about the proposed work

The producer can ask how the agent would position the title, which buyer groups are relevant and what materials or timing would support the approach. The purpose is to understand the plan, rather than seek an unsupported promise of a particular sale.

A follow-up note should identify the questions still open, materials requested and next decision. It can also record which assumptions would require specialist review before any agreement is made.

Compare plans consistently

If several potential partners are being assessed, use the same project information and questions. Record their proposed activities, responsibilities and reporting approach. Comparing only enthusiasm makes it difficult to distinguish a developed plan from a preliminary expression of interest.

The producer’s objective is a workable relationship around a defined film and rights position. A clear package and a consistent assessment process make that decision easier to examine.
