A film distribution platform needs more than a playable master. It also needs an accurate account of the title it is presenting, the version supplied and the information audiences and partners will use to find it.
EIDR describes its purpose as identifying and referencing audiovisual content across the industry. That identification function offers a useful starting point for a distributor’s own metadata discipline, without replacing the recipient’s specific delivery requirements.
Maintain a source record for the title
A working record can connect the approved title, synopsis, relevant identifiers, language information, runtime and supplied materials. Each field should have an owner or an identifiable source.
The exact fields depend on the receiving platform. A distributor should obtain the current specification rather than assume that a spreadsheet used for a previous outlet will satisfy the next one.
Separate the work from its versions
A platform may receive several versions of a film. The team needs to know which descriptive information is shared and which belongs to a particular delivered version.
A hypothetical runtime correction should therefore be checked against the relevant version. Copying a value across every record can create a new error while appearing to standardise the catalogue.
Plan correction as a distribution task
If a synopsis, credit or language label changes, identify the recipients and records affected. Keep a dated account of the correction and the information confirming that it has reached the intended destination.
The same process can identify an upstream problem. Repeated corrections to one field may indicate that the source record needs a clearer owner, rather than that each platform requires a separate manual fix.
Metadata work becomes commercially useful when it supports a consistent title presentation and an understandable delivery history. It should be planned alongside the audiovisual assets, with its own checks and responsibility, rather than left as an unassigned form-filling task at the end of a release.
