Venice’s gap-financing market makes the unresolved part of a project visible

The 2026 selection brought projects and decision-makers together; meeting activity is distinct from financing secured.

A project approaching a gap-financing market should be able to explain what is still missing. The meeting is more useful when a prospective partner can see the difference between work already completed and the specific next commitment being sought.

The 3 July 2026 selection announcement for Venice’s Gap-Financing Market described 65 projects, including fiction, documentary, immersive and Biennale College work, for its September edition. The subsequent 10 September activity report recorded 1,402 one-to-one meetings. These figures describe the programme and its meetings, not the amount of finance closed or the number of projects that entered production.

Explain the gap in project terms

A hypothetical producer can begin by identifying the work that a new partner would enable. That may involve a defined production stage, a missing commercial relationship or a delivery requirement. Describing every unresolved issue as a need for money can hide decisions that must be made first.

The project materials should use consistent information. If the creative proposition, budget account and proposed schedule describe different versions of the film, the meeting may be spent resolving internal ambiguity rather than discussing a possible partnership.

Match the request to the participant

A sales company, a post-production supplier and a prospective co-producer may contribute in different ways. Preparing the same undifferentiated request for every meeting makes it harder to understand whether there is a genuine fit.

A more useful approach is to identify why each conversation belongs in the project’s plan and what information the other party would need next. That keeps the meeting focused without presuming an agreement will follow.

Report progress using actual status

After a market, teams can distinguish a new contact, requested material, continuing discussion and a documented commitment. Those categories make the project’s position easier to understand than an impressive total of meetings.

Venice’s programme offers a structured setting for this work. Its wider film business lesson is that an unresolved financing requirement needs to be legible, and a market’s activity figures should not be used as a substitute for evidence of project-level outcomes.
