An adaptation conversation is more useful when the relevant rights holders and prospective partners can discuss a defined property. Cannes’ Japan IP Market introduced a dedicated setting for that kind of exchange in 2026.
The Marché du Film’s account of Japan’s Country of Honour programme describes a three-day initiative co-organised with TIFFCOM from 15 to 17 May. It names participating Japanese IP holders and identifies pitches and targeted one-to-one meetings. Participation is evidence of a business forum, not proof that any particular property was optioned or made available without conditions.
Describe the proposed adaptation clearly
A producer approaching a rights holder should be able to explain the intended form, audience and market. A broad interest in a familiar property leaves the commercial question unresolved.
A hypothetical film company can prepare a concise project description alongside the questions it needs answered. The aim is to make the conversation specific enough for the rights holder to identify the relevant decision and team.
Keep interest separate from permission
A successful meeting can create a route to further discussion without establishing an agreement. The internal record should distinguish a contact, a request for materials and a documented commercial commitment.
That distinction is especially useful when several people work on the project. A creative team should not proceed on the assumption that a positive conversation has settled rights or approvals.
Use the forum to understand the relationship
A targeted market can also help the parties identify how they would work together. The producer can ask which information is needed next and how the proposed adaptation would be reviewed.
The Japan IP Market is useful evidence of an organised route between Japanese rights holders and international film businesses. Its practical lesson is to prepare a defined adaptation proposition, document the actual status of the enquiry and make the next commercial decision clear.
