A podcast business can distribute the same programme through channels that reveal different amounts of information about consumption. The report should explain those differences before a sponsor compares the numbers.

In its clarification of podcast measurement version 2.3, IAB Tech Lab explains the server-side foundation of open-RSS file delivery. It explicitly distinguishes a download from a confirmed play, and server-measured ad delivery from client-confirmed exposure. The guidance covers audio and video episodes distributed through the relevant file-delivery model; it does not make every video platform’s analytics equivalent.

Label the event being counted

A creator’s commercial report should identify what the source actually measures. If the record describes a valid download, the team should keep that label rather than rename it as an episode completed.

A hypothetical sponsor reviewing an audio feed and a separate video channel needs to see those measures on distinct lines. The publisher can explain each channel’s role without implying that unlike metrics are interchangeable.

Agree the report before selling the campaign

The sales conversation should establish which evidence will be supplied, the reporting period and the person responsible for resolving questions. That allows the sponsor to evaluate the proposal using the information the publisher can actually provide.

If the buyer wants a measure the publisher does not receive, that gap belongs in the discussion before the agreement is finalised. A later dashboard cannot manufacture a signal that the distribution method did not supply.

Maintain a methodology note

A short note can record the reporting source, metric definitions and relevant limitations. When the hosting or distribution setup changes, the team should review whether comparisons across periods remain appropriate.

For a growing podcast business, precise measurement language supports trust. It lets the publisher describe the scale of distribution, explain the evidence of consumption it has and avoid promising a level of certainty that its data cannot support.
