French film export data comes with a reporting-date decision

Unifrance’s early 2025 estimates show why a sales presentation needs to preserve the source’s cut-off.

A French film sales presentation can change meaning when an estimate loses its reporting date. Unifrance’s early overview of 2025 international performance is a useful example of why the source’s methodology belongs next to the headline.

The organisation’s French productions abroad in 2025 brochure projected approximately 42.5 million overseas admissions and €272 million in receipts. It explicitly identified the results as estimates, with final figures expected in October 2026. Its cinema methodology used observations through 14 December 2025. The projected full-year total and the observed cut-off are different pieces of information.

Decide what the number is being used to prove

An early estimate can support an initial discussion about scale. A final historical comparison requires a check for the later release and its definition. Those are different research tasks, even when both start from the same brochure.

A hypothetical sales agent should therefore label a slide as an early estimate if this is the edition being used. The team should not quietly present it as the definitive 2025 result simply because the calendar has moved into 2026.

Retain the population being measured

The brochure explains which productions and territories enter its cinema section. A commercial team should preserve that definition when comparing the result with another nationality’s export performance.

For an individual film, the next enquiry remains title-specific: where it played, what local evidence is available and how that history relates to the proposed release. An aggregate national result cannot establish demand for a particular acquisition.

Make the update easy to perform

A research log can store the source link, edition, observed period, publication status and the slide that uses it. When a final release becomes available, the analyst can replace the relevant measure without rebuilding the whole presentation.

For a global film business, that small administrative habit protects the quality of decisions. The useful question is not only whether a number is accurate in its source, but whether the presentation still tells readers which version of the evidence they are seeing.
