AI production strategy needs a governance brief, too

Define the inputs, human review and approval record alongside the technical test.

A studio evaluating an AI-assisted workflow needs a production decision as well as a technology demonstration. The brief should establish what material will enter the system, what the system will do and who can approve the resulting work.

A UNESCO-convened independent expert report, launched in September 2025 and summarised in UNESCO’s November article, examines AI’s effects on cultural rights, diversity and creative agency. It is policy and expert context, rather than approval of any commercial tool.

Specify the actual use case

“Using AI in production” can describe very different activities. A test involving administrative text should not silently authorise the processing of unreleased footage, performer material or another party’s creative work.

The production can document the proposed inputs, intended output, users and purpose. That gives the relevant creative, operational and specialist reviewers a concrete workflow to assess. It also prevents a successful experiment from expanding beyond its agreed boundaries without a new decision.

Make human review part of the schedule

A tool’s output still needs review against the project’s requirements. The plan should identify who checks factual accuracy, creative suitability, representation and the acceptability of material for its intended use.

Those reviews consume time. A business case that counts generation speed but omits selection, correction and approval work provides an incomplete account of the process. The comparison should cover the whole task from a usable input to an accepted deliverable.

Keep a record the production can understand later

A useful internal record identifies the workflow, responsible people, approved materials and the decision made about the output. Where a tool or process changes, the team should know which work was created under which conditions.

For a global production, cultural and language review should be connected to the intended audience. Technical fluency does not establish that a generated element is appropriate in every context.

The practical implication of the UNESCO discussion is that creative control and governance belong in the same operating plan as technical capability. A production can test a bounded use case while preserving a clear account of who remains responsible for the result.
