Venice’s new Locations Market turns destination interest into a production comparison

The first edition connected film commissions and studios with producers; meetings do not establish a project’s final location.

A location can look compelling on screen while being unsuitable for the way a project needs to operate. Producers comparing destinations need information about the complete production proposition, not simply an attractive setting.

La Biennale’s 10 September 2026 report says the new VPB Locations Market brought together 15 film commissions and studios, with 152 one-to-one meetings on 7–8 September. It describes a focus on destinations and financial support. These are participation and activity figures. They do not establish how many productions selected a location, qualified for an incentive or subsequently spent money there.

Compare the same project in each destination

A hypothetical production can prepare one consistent brief for its location enquiries: the creative requirements, likely schedule, intended scale and services the team expects to source. Without that common reference, responses may describe different assumptions and become difficult to compare.

The brief should leave room for alternatives. A commission or studio may propose a practical solution that changes part of the original plan. The producer can then assess the creative and operational consequences explicitly rather than comparing headline offers alone.

Distinguish information from confirmation

An introductory meeting may provide a route to more detailed guidance, but it does not settle availability or project-specific eligibility. A team should identify which statements are general descriptions and which have been checked against its actual production.

The next step can be a list of questions requiring written clarification. That makes it easier to involve the relevant production, accounting and advisory teams before a location preference becomes a commitment.

Keep logistics beside the financial proposition

A destination comparison should include the work needed to deliver the film there. Travel, supplier coordination and the practical sequence of production decisions can affect whether an apparently attractive option fits the project.

Venice’s new market offers an organised starting point for those enquiries. Its relevance to video production logistics is the opportunity to compare real operating propositions. The final choice still needs project-specific information and a workable production plan, rather than an assumption that a successful meeting has resolved the destination.
