A place to evaluate a model serves a different purpose from a live production workflow. The distinction matters when a media organisation moves from an interesting demonstration to a commitment involving real operating work.
The EBU Technology & Innovation Data and AI programme describes its AI Sandbox as a collaborative environment where members can showcase and evaluate custom models for media applications. That description establishes an evaluation role. It does not imply public access, approval for every dataset or readiness of every model for a live service.
Set a decision for the evaluation
A media team should begin by identifying what it wants to learn. A useful test might examine whether an output helps a particular role complete a defined task, rather than ask whether the model is impressive in general.
The expected result and the review method should be recorded before the test. That gives colleagues a common basis for interpreting what happened and prevents the evaluation from changing its objective after the result is known.
Distinguish demonstration material from production material
The team needs to understand which inputs are appropriate for the environment being used. The decision about evaluation material should be explicit and connected to the relevant permissions and operating arrangement.
A hypothetical archive team can start with an approved sample and record the differences between that sample and its wider collection. The result can then be described accurately without assuming that it applies to every item.
Define the next gate
A promising evaluation should lead to another specific decision: further testing, a bounded pilot or a reason not to proceed. The next stage needs its own owner, resources and acceptance criteria.
The EBU’s sandbox model is useful because it gives collaborative evaluation a distinct place in media innovation. For entertainment businesses, the management lesson is to preserve that distinction and make the evidence from a test support a clearly defined next step.
