The US recorded-music synchronization category expanded in the first half of 2026, according to the RIAA. For screen producers and music businesses, the result is a useful demand signal with a carefully defined scope.
The RIAA’s 2026 mid-year report lists synchronization revenue of US$231.8 million, up 18.2% from the comparable period. The table uses US wholesale dollar value, net after returns. It is not a measure of every composition and recording licence agreed worldwide.
A growing category does not price an individual placement
For a producer researching music licensing for film and TV, a market total cannot answer what a particular use will cost or whether permission is available. Those questions depend on the actual creative request and the parties involved.
A useful brief describes the intended use before asking for a quote. It can identify the production, the material being considered, the relevant version and the planned distribution context, while leaving rights conclusions to the appropriate specialists.
Make the clearance conversation easier to act on
A music supervisor or rights team needs a process for tracking questions and decisions. An email containing a track title is not necessarily enough for the production team to know what has been resolved.
In a hypothetical project, a creative change might introduce a longer excerpt or an additional promotional use. The responsible person should know that the brief has changed and determine what further review is needed. The operating record should reflect the current plan rather than the original request alone.
Keep market development separate from entitlement
For catalogue businesses, category growth may support a discussion about improving discoverability, metadata and response capacity. It does not establish that a catalogue is suitable for a specific production.
A seller can make that discussion more useful by providing accurate material and a clear contact path for enquiries. A buyer can help by explaining the production’s requirements early enough for a considered response.
The RIAA figure adds context to the commercial market. The work of turning a creative idea into an executable music plan still happens at the level of a defined use and documented decisions.
