Before adding a new revenue model, a video business should know which parts of its catalogue are ready to support it. An archive can contain valuable material alongside missing versions, incomplete records and work that needs further review.

Vimeo’s OTT selling guidance describes several ways a service can offer video. The operator’s choice still needs to connect to the material and audience proposition it can actually deliver.

Classify the catalogue by readiness

A working inventory can distinguish material ready for the proposed use, material requiring preparation and material with unresolved questions. Each status should have a clear meaning and an owner responsible for checking it.

The inventory should connect the audiovisual assets with their metadata and supporting records. A playable file alone does not establish that the business has everything needed for the intended offer.

Evaluate a defined package

Rather than assess the archive as one large pool, choose a specific programme group or audience proposition. Identify the work required to prepare that package and the commercial route the team intends to test.

A hypothetical season collection may need artwork, descriptive information and version checks before it can become a coherent product. Those tasks should be visible in the operating estimate instead of being treated as free use of existing content.

Make the first review actionable

The pilot should define what the business needs to learn: whether the offer attracts relevant interest, whether the preparation work is manageable and which commercial information can be obtained.

Keep audience observations, transactions and reconciled receipts separate. That gives the team a clearer explanation of the package’s performance than one blended “monetization” measure.

A catalogue audit is most useful when it leads to a specific decision about a defined set of material. It can reveal an opportunity, but it can also show that preparation work or missing information should be resolved before expansion.
