The MLC’s announcement of an April 2027 start for market-share distributions gives music publishers a reason to review their data work now. The operational task is to identify unresolved catalogue questions through the organisation’s official processes.
In its 30 September 2026 annual-meeting release, The MLC said it had distributed more than US$4.2 billion in total royalties and that the process for distributing remaining unclaimed accrued royalties would begin in April 2027. The announcement concerns its US mechanical-royalty remit; it is not a worldwide music-income deadline.
Turn the announcement into a catalogue review
A publisher or administrator can begin with the works it is responsible for, the records it maintains and the unresolved issues already known to its team. The objective is a defined queue of questions, rather than an assumption that every unexplained payment difference is an unclaimed royalty.
The review should assign an owner to each issue and retain the relevant work identifiers and correspondence. Sensitive account or payment information should remain within the organisation’s appropriate systems, rather than circulate in a broad editorial or marketing document.
Use the official process for the specific issue
Registration, matching, ownership questions and payment administration are different tasks. The team should identify which official resource or support route applies before submitting a request. A broad public milestone cannot determine the status of an individual work.
A useful internal record shows what was checked, what evidence was supplied, the response received and what remains open. That prevents a succession of staff from repeating the same enquiry without understanding its history.
Keep operational readiness separate from an earnings forecast
Completing a data review does not establish that a particular amount will become payable. A business should report the work completed and any confirmed outcomes separately from assumptions about future receipts.
The announcement supplies a concrete planning date. Its practical value is to focus responsibility and follow-up around catalogue information that the business can verify, while leaving entitlement and individual payment questions to the applicable records and official procedures.
