SoundExchange’s US$13 billion distribution milestone and its 2025 annual result tell different stories. A rights business needs to preserve that distinction when it uses the figures to assess the market.
In its 18 March 2026 announcement, the organisation said lifetime distributions since 2003 had passed US$13 billion. It separately reported unaudited 2025 distributions of US$991.5 million, 5.9% below 2024. A cumulative milestone can rise while a particular year’s distributions decline.
Keep the period attached to the number
A cumulative total describes activity over an organisation’s history. An annual figure describes a defined period. They should occupy different lines in a market briefing rather than be presented as interchangeable evidence of current growth.
The qualification “unaudited” also belongs with the annual number. A later publication may provide a different reporting status or revised information. A planning document should retain the date and version of its source so the team can recognise such changes.
Separate market context from catalogue performance
The organisation’s aggregate distribution does not explain what any individual recording earned. A catalogue operator needs its own statements and the relevant reporting detail before drawing conclusions about its business.
A practical review can distinguish changes in the catalogue, the periods covered and adjustments visible in the records. If information is missing, record the question for the relevant partner instead of using an industry total to fill the gap.
Build a comparable reporting series
When tracking an organisation across years, use consistently defined figures. Collections, distributions and cash received by a particular rights holder can occur at different stages. A spreadsheet should identify the measure, currency, period and source publication for every observation.
This does not require a complex analytics system. A clear data dictionary and a source link can prevent a misleading comparison from entering a presentation. The value of the SoundExchange announcement is its combination of scale and a separately stated annual outcome, rather than a single number used to stand for both.
